Nike Dunk Low Flyknit Review Facts

Lately, Nike has been recreating everything and putting it in a Flyknit skin. What does that mean for the shoe designs themselves? This means that many of the shoes that were once very uncomfortable or otherwise lacked breathability now provide wearers with what they need in terms of airflow quite easily. The latest shoe to make the jump over to this material would be the Nike Dunk Low Flyknit. While all of the features of the shoe that once made it great have stayed the same so far, the hide, the thing that can make or break a shoe’s ability to provide it’s wearers with any type of comfort has been completely shifted so that it can provide wearers with what they need in terms of airflow quite easily.

Editor's Pros & Cons
Pros
  • Very comfortable upper
  • Form-fitting
  • Breathable
  • Decent traction
  • Durable
Cons
  • Hard to keep clean

Outsole

The material that makes up the bulk of the outsole has managed to stay the same; it’s still designed from a hardened rubber and provides wearers with a bit of longevity because of it’s so being. The thing that has changed about the design of the outsole is that it’s a bit more streamlined and provides wearers what they need in terms of grip because of it. The design of the outsole features a multi-directional, slightly grooved outsole pattern that allows the shoe to provide its wearers with the grip that they’d need in order to feel comfortable about using the shoe in their place of choice.

Midsole

The midsole on this shoe is designed from the usual EVA foam material. To keep in line with that which wearers are used to from this brand, Nike has managed to design the shoe and allow it to continue to provide wearers with the cushioning that they need when in engaging in their respective physical activity. One of the functions of the foam is to conform to the shape of the wearer’s foot and provide them with a bit of support while in use; this will be discussed in more depth as we get to that section in this review.

Upper

The upper of the Nike Dunk Low is what has changed dramatically. In many of the base designs of the shoe a leather material has been featured; to switch it up a bit and provide wearers what they need in terms of breathability as well as flexibility, Nike decided to fit the shoe with their signature Flyknit material. This material is very much like mesh and is naturally porous which results in an amazing feel for the wearer of the shoe. The shoe still features all of the traditional Nike design specs such as the flaps along its side and the contrasting colors on the toe box and along the sides.

Weight

While no weight has been specified for this specific model, this shoe design is rather lightweight; it makes sense for it to be so. The upper of the shoe is constructed from their Flyknit material which adds very little to the design in terms of weight. When compared to the previous upper construction materials(leather isn’t the lightest material). In addition to the Flyknit being used in the construction of this shoe’s upper, the rest of the shoe makes use of very few materials (the sole unit is the only portion of the shoe that has a semblance of a heavy material incorporated into it). One can expect to have a fairly comfortable and easily movable experience while in this particular shoe.

Breathability

Nike had a good idea when they decided that they would begin to use Flyknit in the construction of many of their shoes. The material is much more porous than many other materials that are popular in their designs and works to give wearers what they need in terms of comfort and breathability when in use. This material, when compared to the other leather and Nylon materials that are popular in the design of many of their older shoes, does a great job of allowing the feet to move freely while in use.

Comfort

As is the nature of Flyknit, the materials greatly improves the levels of comfort that are provided to the feet of the wearer while the shoes are in use. The entire upper of this particular shoe is designed so that wearers can have what they need in terms of comfort; even more so than that provided by the original model of the shoe. The flyknit in this shoe’s design allows the wearer to move their feet freely and, due to the non-abrasive nature of the material itself, provides wearers with much more than adequate levels of comfort even if the shoe is worn without socks. The cushioning at the heel of this particular shoe allows it to provide its wearers with what they need in terms of comfort due to the lack of rubbing that occurs when the shoe is in place on the foot.

Style

The use of the Flyknit in the design of this shoe enables it to provide its wearers with what they need in terms of style as well. Something must be said about the way that Flyknit always seems to bolster the already stylish designs that many shoes have. The Flyknit gives the shoe a lifestyle shoe sort of feel and enables it to have what they need in terms of versatility in wear; not many shoes have the ability to be worn with various different outfit types so, this particular model’s ability to do so is something to take note of. The flyknit redesign did take away from the shoe’s ability to be worn for the more strenuous activities that the initial leather model could handle though; this is just something to keep in mind when purchasing.

Durability

At first glance, Flyknit may come off as a material that doesn’t have what wearers need in order to function in their shoes for very long. The funny thing about this material is that the tensile strength that the material has allows it to provide wearers with what they need in terms of longevity from their shoes. The longevity that these shoes provide stems from the fact that the fibers used in the creation of these shoes are a bit tougher than the typical mesh material; knit materials tend to be this way regardless of their design.

Protection

Contrary to belief, the design of these shoes is not something that is meant to be used for strenuous or otherwise dangerous activities.> The incorporation of the Flyknit in the shoe’s design somewhat takes away from its ability to guard one’s feet while they are moving around in the shoes. So, when on the court, one of the more important things to make note of with the design of this shoe is that it would be a somewhat simple task to misstep; while flyknit is comfortable, it’s stability is somewhat questionable.

Responsiveness

One of the other great things about having a shoe with a Flyknit upper is that the material easily responds to the individual movements of the wearer’s foot. This means that the material expands to meet the needs of the foot (within reason) or in other words, responsive. In addition to this, the design of the midsole is one that makes use of EVA foam. EVA foam is a material that easily responds to the movements and needs of the wearer’s foot, providing them with the supportive feel that they’d need when the shoe is in use.

Support

This was touched upon in the previous section but, support is something that the EVA material in the shoe’s midsole is actually great at providing to its wearers. The material conforms to the shape of the heel and (at least in the case of this shoe) is more abundant in said section. The width of the shoe allows wearers to have adequate toes splay as well which translates into an even distribution of pressure throughout the shoe’s midsole. Support for the upper of this shoe, on the other hand, is something that must have quite a bit of attention paid to it. The upper and it’s Flyknit remake is great at providing support to the sides of the wearer’s foot during low-paced activities. During fast-paced activities, it’s a rather simple thing for the material to move in various directions and “give” underneath one’s weight.

Terrain

The outsole on this shoe is actually rather durable; implying that it can be used on various terrains. The use a hardened rubber material in it’s make allows the outsole to provide wearers with the longevity that they’d need in order to easily wear their shoes on various terrains without worrying about it’s breaking down. With that being said, the design of this shoe is one that leans more to the walking shoes for women and men side of things and shouldn’t really be used for strenuous activity on any type of terrain really. That’s one of the side-effects of designing the shoe with a full-knit upper.

Price

A great thing that Nike did with the release of this particular shoe was make it affordable by many different individuals; the price of the shoe is nowhere near expensive and won’t put stress on one’s wallet or bank account if it were necessary to buy several pairs. Another great thing that comes with the purchase of this particular pair of shoes is that it's versatile as well as inexpensive; with its purchase one wouldn’t have to worry about the shoe only having the ability to be worn with one type of outfit-it can be worn with several

Traction

One of the features that Nike praised with the design of this shoe, in particular, is the fact that the outsole has an improved level of grip that it provides to its wearers. The outsole of this shoe is designed using a hardened rubber which allows the shoe to really dig stick to the surface that it’s being worn on. In addition to the use of hardened rubber in the shoe’s design, the outsole has a circular outsole patterning. The patterning itself can be used as flex grooves which enables the shoe to provide its wearers with what they need in terms of grip due to the flex that they introduce to the design of the shoe itself.

Flexibility

Another great thing about having a shoe designed from Flyknit is that the material easily moves along with the needs of the wearer’s foot. The porous features that this material allows the shoe to have work to give it an added level of flexibility; this flexibility is one of the reasons why this shoe’s comfort levels are so highly regarded. The sole unit and its patterning also moves rather easily to the needs of the foot and have no problem when it comes to the range of motion.

Stability

When used for slow-paced activities, the Flyknit materials allow the shoe to provide its wearers with a relatively stable feel. The snug fit that the shoe provides ensures that wearers have what they need in terms of stability when worn. The lacing, as well as the use of Flyknit straps along the sides of the shoe, also work to secure and stabilize the feel of the actual shoe.

Drop

No drop for this particular shoe has been specified but, it would be safe to say that it manages to fall into a fairly reasonable zone. The midsole of this particular shoe isn't very thick and the drop appears to be around 10mm (don’t quote me though).

Key Features

• Flyknit upper
• Hardened rubber outsole
• EVA foam midsole

Verdict

This is honestly a very well-designed shoe. All of its features are of the variety that allows it to be incredibly comfortable and ensure that wearers have what they need in terms of value when purchased. Not to mention that a pair can be purchased for a price that can be considered nothing short of inexpensive. With that in mind, the Nike Dunk Flyknit Low Top is a shoe that works to provide it’s wearers with what they need in terms of functionality and does so by being both durable and fashionable.
