Editor's Pros & Cons
Pros
  • Comfortable
  • Stylish
  • High level of Energy-return
  • Responsive
  • Breathable
Cons
  • Expensive

Outsole

The outsole of the 270 is about as unique as outsole come nowadays. The shoe’s forefoot features an incredibly thin layer of rubber that has protruding pieces that act as stabilizers for the foot. In addition to the rubber on the forefoot of the shoe, the outsole (where the air unit is stationed) features a see-through, somewhat thicker layer of hardened rubber. The use of this material in the design of the outsole of the shoe allows it to provide wearers with an added level of grip. Also, the use of the see-through rubber in the heel of the shoe allows the air-unit to be accentuated and provides wearers with an added sense of style.

Midsole

To keep in line with the blend of technology and comforting materials that are typical of the Airmax line, the 270 have both an Airpod in the heel of the shoe as well as the typical foam in the forefoot. The heel of the shoe and the visible air technology that has been used, gives the wearer that added bounce that they need from their shoes while in use; it also makes the heel look really cool as it is a neon color. The inner technology of the forefoot of the shoe is what makes the midsole of the shoe itself stand out to wearers. The midsole of the shoe makes use of injected phylon as well as a Cushlon outer which gives the wearer what they’d need in terms of comfort.

Upper

The upper of the 270 comes with a wide-range of technologies incorporated which give the shoe an added level of stability and comfort while in use. The shoe features a bootie design which eliminates the use of the need for seams in the design of the shoe. To give you a better understanding of exactly what it is that you’ll be seeing when you look at the actual shoe, I feel the need to break down the actual materials incorporated. The heel of the shoe (the entire hind part really) makes use of a soft leather material which adds stability and structure to the otherwise “loose” shoe design. The forefoot makes use of flyknit materials which makes the shoe incredibly breathable and allows for an added range of motion while the shoes are in use.

Weight

No weight for this particular model of Air Max has been specified but, from the use of the various different materials in the shoe’s design it can be inferred that the shoe doesn’t weigh much on foot. The upper is made from flyknit and upon looking at various other models that make use of this material it is a relatively simple thing to say that the shoe would fall in line with the lightweight design that various other models that make use of this material.

Breathability

The upper of the 270 makes use of various different layers but still manages to be what individuals would consider breathable. For starters, the design of this shoe makes use of Flyknit materials; Flyknit is known for being inherently breathable due to the enlarged perforations that the knitting process places into the material. In addition to the perforations that the flyknit material allows the shoe to have, the under layers of the shoe also manages to be relatively thin and allow for adequate airflow to makes its way into the shoe’s design.

Comfort

The various materials that are used in the design of the 270’s upper work to give wearers what they need in terms of comfort. The flexibility that both the leather and knit materials that make up the heel and forefoot of the shoe have allows the shoe to feel utterly natural when in use. The high range of motion that this shoe provides to its wearers will be discussed more in depth later in the post but for now, it’ll suffice to say that the shoe feels wonderful because of it being present. Now, of course, the Air unit in the heel of the shoe will feel wonderful. Due to the unit in this shoe’s design being the largest unit present in an AirMax design in a long time it’s only natural that the shoe provides its wearers with what they need in terms of comfort while their shoes are in use. The material conforms and allows the wearer’s feet to sink and into the heel, in a way. It’s relatively simple for wearers to experience what they need in terms of comfort while the shoes are in use.

Style

If you can’t tell from the cut of the shoe, these are a pair of running shoes. These shoes have a design that allows them to provide wearers with what they need in terms of aesthetics as well due to the modern design that they’ve been given. For instance, unlike various other Air Max designed shoes, the 270 features a design that makes use of sleek cut; this sleek cut makes it relatively simple to wear these shoes for various different activities outside of the typical athletic use the shoes are intended to be used for.

Durability

One of the great things about having a shoe with an upper designed from Flyknit is that you’re able to get the best of both worlds. Flyknit is known for the incredibly high-tensile strength that it provides to its wearers; this means that the material is incredibly strong and will provide wearers with what they need in terms of longevity because of its being so. Another thing that wearers won’t have to worry about with the purchase of this shoe is the outsole; the outsole is designed from a thick layer of rubber that allows it’s wearers to have what they need in terms of longevity when in use. A great thing about both the thick foam at the forefoot of the 270 and the airpod in the heel is that they will provide wearers with what they need in terms of comfort for relatively long times due to the engineering that Nike placed into their design; these shoes are built to last.

Protection

When it comes to protection, the design of the upper of the shoe doesn’t have the highest amounts of it; that is, if you’re looking for protection when using the shoe for athletic activities (such as the running that they’re designed for) the snug fit that they and various other Nike models provide to wearers ensure that they have what they need in terms of security while in use.

Responsiveness

The cushioning in the design of this shoe is meant to be as responsive as wearers would need it to be. The Visible Air unit in the heel of the shoe provides wearers with what they need in terms of responsiveness due to the lack of material being present; think of walking in these shoes the way that you would think of walking in a pair of pillows. In addition to the visible air, the forefoot of the sole unit features Cushlon, a material that can be thought of as a new and improved version of EVA. The Cushlon material conforms to and supports the various curves of the wearer’s foot quite easily.

Support

The fact that there is literally an Air Unit in the heel of the shoe means that this model will provide wearers with what they need in terms of support. The Visible Air lacks any real form and thus can conform to the shape of the wearer’s curves. The sheer size of the Air Unit also provides wearers with what they need in terms of support; the fact that the Air unit is larger than the average air unit opens the shoe up to being able to provide wearers with what they need in terms of support for the heel of the foot. The snug fit that the shoe provides to its wearers also allows it to be relatively comfortable due to the fact that it controls the splay of the wearer’s foot.

Terrain

The durability that is native to the hardened rubber in the outsole of this shoe enables it to provide wearers with what they need in terms of functionality on a wide variety of terrains. The 270 is mainly designed to be worn on road terrains but, can also be used on indoor terrains such as treadmills and for workouts.

Price

Here’s the thing about the 270 that may throw someone off, this shoe is not cheap in the slightest; to be honest, this shoe is something that many can consider being expensive. The price of the shoe is definitely justified though; once one looks at the various technologies and the craftsmanship that comes along with their purchase, it makes a bit of sense for them to be priced in the way that they are. Along with the knowledge that the purchasing price of this particular Air Max comes along with a quality shoe, the design of this shoe also features various technologies that simply won’t be found inside of a pair of less expensive shoes. This means that along with the purchase of these shoe wearers receive a level of functionality that simply won’t be present in a pair of say, regular runners.

Traction

As soon as one takes a closer look at the intricate details of the outsole of this shoe, they will notice that it’s meant to provide insane levels of grip on it’s intended surface. The high-pressure points of the shoe make use of a thick, hardened rubber that’s also sectioned off into chunks; this allows the shoe to provide wearers with what they need in terms of grip and for the shoe to provide a great level of functionality for those forefoot strikers.

Flexibility

The Flyknit upper of this particular shoe also works to provide wearers with what they need in terms of the range of motion from this particular shoe. The porous nature of the Flyknit material allows it to provide wearers what they’d need in terms of flexibility. The separation that runs the length of the shoe’s design also ensures that wearers have what they need in terms of side to side ease of movement; regardless of the way that one chooses to land while in the 270, it will manage to reasonably accommodate.

Stability

The separation that runs the length of the shoe’s design is also what works to provide wearers with what they need in terms of comfort when the shoe is in use. The use of the soft-leather in the heel of the upper also provides the shoe with what a bit of structure that translates into added security for the movements of the wearer’s foot.

Drop

No drop has been specified for the Air Max 270 but, it can be inferred that the shoe has an adequate if not high drop. The larger than normal Air Unit in the heel of the shoe causes that section to be a bit large; when compared to the rest of the narrow forefoot of the shoe, it makes sense that the shoe’s drop is rather large.

Key Features

• Air Max technology
• Flyknit upper
• Cushlon Foam
• No-sew upper

Verdict

In closing, this shoe is something that not many would/should regret purchasing. The additional comfort that stems from the use of the Air Unit in the heel and the Flyknit in the surrounding areas, allows this shoe to provide the highest levels of functionality to the wearers of the shoe. While the price range of the 27 may be higher than normal, it can be said that it is well worth it; for the technology that one would receive along with its purchase, it makes sense to give this shoe a try.
